1911 Top Mound Showdown - Collins v Ford
Ray Collins (10-67, Red Sox) v Russ Ford (10-68, Yankees)

Les Nunamaker singled home Larry Gardner to give the Sox a 1-0 lead in the top second. The Highlanders answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth on Larry Gardner single that plated Cozy Dolan. The Red Sox regained the lead on a seventh inning single by Nunamaker that scored Heinie Wagner.
Boston added an insurance run in the top of the ninth thanks to a John Knoght error that scored Clyde Engle. Harry Wolter led off the bottom of the inning with a single and scored on a Dolan single, but Collins finished off the next three hitters for the complete game win.

Bit of a strange game this one. Magee's first home run came in the first inning - off Marquard's card. Thomas' homer in the seventh also came off Marquard's card - a card with only one home run number! Marquard did not pitch badly, but those home runs doomed him.

1911 Top Mound Showdown -Adams vs Alexander

Not much to say about this one. The Phillies took batting practice against Adams pounding out 10 hits off him in just 4.2 innings. Alexander had little trouble with the Pirates until the seventh when they scored three meaningless runs.

The game that seemed to go on forever!
The Red Sox drew first blood in the top of the fifth when Harry Hooper singled home Bill Carrigan. The White Sox tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Shano Collins doubled and scored on a Duffy Lewis two base error. Each team had good scoring opportunities in subsequent innings, but that was all the scoring until the bottom of the thirteenth.
Matty McIntyre singled with two out and advanced to second when Lee Tannehill drew a walk. Shano Collins smashed a grounder to third, but Larry Gardner's poor throw bounced past Clyde Engle allowing McIntyre to score the winning run.

Mathewson had some bad luck in the first inning when Josh Devore's two base error on lead off hitter Jimmy Sheckard led to an unearned run. Solly Hofman's sac fly scored Sheckard. But after that Mathewson was really on his game retiring 16 hitters in a row during one stretch.
Richie kept the Giants off the scoreboard until seventh. Larry Doyle led off with a triple and scored on Red Murray's single. Murray scored what turned out to be the game winner on Fred Merkle's triple.

Neal Ball tripled and then scored the first run of the game on Terry Turner's single.
The Senators tied the game when Germany Schaeffer walked and then scored on Kid Elberfield's sac fly.
Johnson injured his arm in the fifth and had to leave the game.
Washington took the lead in the ninth when Doc Gessler scored on a Tilly Walker sac fly.
Charles Becker relieved Dixie Walker who had previously Johnson. The Naps gave him a rude welcome in the bottom of the ninth.
Ivy Olson led off with a single that was followed by a Shoeless Joe Jackson single. George Stovall doubled them both home for the dramatic win.

While both pitchers struggled in this one, Leifeld's defense really let him down, especially in the fifth when two errors opened the floodgates and allowed the Giants to score four unearned runs.

Top 1911 Pitchers - Ames vs Steele
Giants (Red Ames 2.68) at Pirates (Elmer Steele 2.67)

Pittsburgh's George Gibson scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third on a single by Bobby Byrne.
Fred Snodgrass led off the top of the fourth with a triple and then scored on Red Murray's grooubd out.
That was all the scoring until the 10th. Chief Wilson doubled off of reliever Doc Crandall. Crandall retired George Gibson on a grounder to short. Newt Hunter, pinch hitting for Steele, delivered a two out single to bring home Gibson with the winning run.
Both pitchers were very effective despite racking few strikeouts.

1935 All-Star Game
The game was played in Cleveland, so the AL was the home team. Bill Walker started for the NL and Lefty Gomez for the AL. Here's how it went.
Joe Vosmik led off the bottom of the first with a walk and scored on a Jimmie Foxx sac fly. AL leads 1-0.
Jimmie Wilson tripled off Lefty Grove in the top of the fifth and then scored on Pepper Martin's single to tie the game 1-1.
The Nationals took the lead in the eighth on a strange sequence. Arky Vaughan walked and then went to third after singles by Mel Ott and Ducky Medwick. With the bases loaded and Mel Harder on the mound for the AL, Harder inexplicably balks to score Vaughan! NL leads 2-1.
Buddy Myer led off the eighth with a walk and then scored when Earl Averill drew a bases loaded walk against Dizzy Dean. Game tied 2-2.
In the bottom of the tenth Ben Chapman doubles off Paul Derringer. That brings pitcher Tommy Bridges to the plate. I tried to play everybody, so I have no pinch-hitter for Bridges. But Bridges is not a terrible hitter for a pitcher - he hit .239. You can see where this is going, no? Sure enough, Bridges doubles to score Chapman with the winning run. Bridges gets the walk off double and the Win too.

The Pirates jump on Lanier for three runs in the top of the first, but the Cards more than answer with a 6 run bottom of the first that was capped by Whitey Kurowski's 2 run homer.

1960 Pirates vs 1963 Dodgers
Bob Friend vs. Sandy Koufax
Koufax wasn't on his game at all. After some lead changes, the Dodgers took a 5-4 lead into the top of the ninth before Dick Groat's two run homer gave the Pirates a 6-5 lead. The Dodgers couldn't rally in the bottom of the inning, so it's a disappointing night for the Chavez Ravine faithful.

Steve Carlton pitched well against the Yanks allowing 3 runs in 9 innings while striking out 10. Tony Lazzeri drove in all 3 Yankee runs with a sac fly and a two run triple. Deron Johnson's triple brought home the only Philies run as the Yanks win 3-1.
