Astros history project game 1

September 18, 1998

Astros (Randy Johnson) vs Pirates (Elmer Dessens)

Both pitchers had their way in the early innings before the Astros got to Dessens in the fourth. Ricky Gutierrez led off with a single. Jeff Bagwell followed a Derek Bell strikeout with a walk advancing Gutierrez to second. Moses Alou's grounder to Aramis Ramirez should have been an infeikd hit loading the bases, but Ramirez thought he had a chance on Alou and uncorked a wild throw over first base and into the outfield for a two base error. Bagwell and Gutierrez scored on the error and Alou went to third. Carl Everett followed with a sac fly scoring Alou with the third run of the inning.

The Astros added another run in the sixth when Alou doubled and advanced to third on Sean Berry's single before racing home on a Jeff Tabaka wild pitch.

The Pirates finally broke through against Johnson in the seventh when Jason Kendall took The Big Unit deep for a solo homer.

The Astros crushed any thoughts of a Pirate come back by more than answering with three runs in the eighth. After Bagwell singled and Everett walked, Sean Berry brought them home with a double. Ausmus then singled Berry to third before Johnson's sac fly brought him home.

Astros win 7-1.

Johnson struck out six while walking none and allowing just 4 hits.

1958 Tigers at 1958 Yankees

I haven't been playing much Extra Innings lately, but I decided to get in a game today and it turned out to be a good one.

1958 Tigers (Frank Lary) at 1958 Yankees (Whitey Ford)

This great pitching match up lived up to its billing. The Tigers struck first when Reno Bartoia led off the 4th inning by reaching on an error. He advanced to third on Harvey Kuenn's single and then scored when Gus Zernial grounded into a double play.

Meanwhile, Lary dominated the Yankees allowing just 3 baserunners in the first 8 innings. But Lary would soon find out that the Yankees are a hard bunch to finish off.

The ninth started innocently with a Lary strikeout of Hank Bauer, but then it went all wrong for the visitors. Norm Siebern drew a walk and then advanced to second when Mickey Mantle legged out an infield hit. Yogi Berra followed with a single that plated Siebern with the tying run. Lary, normally a good control pitcher, then walked Skowron to load the bases. That's all for Lary as he is sent to the showers in favor of Tom Morgan. Morgan hardly had time to break a sweat thanks to Gil McDougald's single that brought home Mantle with the winning run. So, the Yanks win a game in which they only get 4 hits.
