Although this race held true to real life form, there were a number of twists along the way.
The heavily favored Australians were steady but unspectacular in the first 150 meters while the Americans managed to match them them stride for stride at the end of the second leg. However, a disastrous beginning of the third leg dropped the Americans to third while the Brits and Aussies were running stride for stride.
With the world's best sprinter Elizabeth Cuthbert anchoring the last 100 meters, the Aussies had to like their chances. Enigmatically though, Cuthbert started her leg off terribly slow allowing Britain to take the lead. Just as it was looking as if the Brits may steal the gold from the Aussies, in Melbourne no less, Cuthbert showed her true talent with a blazing finish to claim the gold.

1972 Munich - Men's 400 Meters Finals
Vince Matthews USA 43.89 GOLD
Wayne Collett USA 44.20 SILVER
Julius Sang KEN 44.24 BRONZE
Charles Asati KEN 44.61
John Smith USA 44.78
Horst-Rüdiger Schlöske FRG 45.05
Markku Kukkoaho FIN 45.20
Karl Honz FRG 46.19
This was a very fast race. Matthews' real life time was 44.66, but here the top four finishers all bettered that.
Matthews' time of 43.89 was just a hair behind the Olympic and World Record of 43.86 set by Lee Evans at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
Before the race I rolled to see if John Smith would finish and what his rating would be. Here were the possibilities: 1-4 he does not finish, 5 he finishes using his original C rating, 6 he finishes using a B rating. He rolled a 6 - the best possible outcome for him. Unfortunately, he got off to a slow start from which he could not recover.
