Good stuff on steroids and the Hall of Fame

Rosenthal is trying to portray himself as conflicted and I have no reason to doubt him really. But apparently he's so conflicted that all he can come up with is a set of conflicting arguments that aren't even particularly coherent on their own, much less as a set.
I just feel that steroids created a far greater imbalance.

I'm not sure what this means. For now I'll assume imbalance in terms of performance relative to non-users.

How would we know? Presumably you would see more dominance in the steroid era.

Even if we assume this is true, one explanation for this is that (damn near) everybody was using greenies.

But I don't see why it would be true. Other than Bonds and Pujols, McGwire, Bagwell, and Manny haven't dominated this era any more than Aaron, Robinson and Mays (or Musial, Mantle and Williams).

Some people like to point to records but let me (again) remind everyone that the "greenie" era saw records for career hits, season and career HRs, season and career SBs (several times) and career games played (a few times). The 60s and 70s saw an unprecedented number of 500-HR hitters, the first rash of power/speed combo hitters, a ton of 300-game winners and a ton of 3000-K pitchers along with, as we've been discussing, the only rise in pitcher CGs and CG rates in MLB history. Carew and Brett challenged 400, Rose (kinda) challenged DiMaggio. And Davey Johnson hit 43 HR. And a 30-game winner, can you ####### believe it?

We love that era precisely because of that imbalance (at the inividual level), the great achievements, the level of power and speed, the insanely low ERAs, the blazing fastballs, Oscar Gamble's enormous 'fro. Hell, Mario Mendoza is forever emblazoned in the MLB lexicon for his ineptitude!

What we have seen is a collective jump up the offensive scale such that, e.g., OPS totals of today, especially ISO of today, is much higher. Even if we ascribe this all to steroids (which is hard to do), it suggests very widespread usage and, therefore, a "balanced" playing field. I'd also say the dominance we've seen on the pitcher's side is in line with the dominance we've seen on the hitter's side. Maddux and Clemens have legit claims to the greatest pitchers of all-time (certainly since W Johnson), R Johnson has a claim on the greatest LHP of all-time and Pedro can rival Koufax for sheer awesomeness.

Within the context of each era, I don't see how either appears more dominant than the other. In the context of MLB history, the "greenie era" is the one that seems more dominant on an individual level (and therefore imbalanced) while the silly ball era seems dominant on a collective level (like the 1930s AL or the deadball era and therefore balanced).

Now maybe he means "moral imbalance" of some sort -- PEDs worse than speed. If so, he remembers the scare stories of the 60s and 70s and "speed freaks" much differently than I do. And look at the huge dust-up over cocaine use which didn't even seem to be performance-enhancing. Not to mention that amphetamines were on Schedule III (is that the right one?) long before steroids.

The media could have made amphetamine use the bete noire of baseball but they chose not to -- just as they chose to ignore PEDs until Canseco's book and the BALCO bust (and still tend to ignore their role in football).

The sports media collectively decided not to get sanctimonious about amphetamines and so, of course, the fans didn't. During the 90s, the sports media collectively decided not to get sanctimonious about PED usage and so, of course, the fans didn't. Then the sports media and Congress decided to get sanctimonious about PED usage and so, of course, at least some set of vocal fans did.

I'm sorry but I will not accept that the level of sportswriter sanctimony defines what is cheating and what is not, what is fair and what is not or what is legitimate and what is not.

If you view (pre-testing) PED usage as cheating but greenie usage as "just part of the game" then you are a hypocrite.*

* If you take the view that both were cheating but the past induction of drug-using cheats doesn't justify the future induction of drug-using cheats, at least you have a leg to stand on.

PS Andy, I know I just called you a hypocrite. You seem like a nice guy and you generally try to argue things fairly and squarely and you at least demand some reasonable level of evidence. But on this aspect of the issue, I'm sorry, you're a hypocrite.

Or possibly a moron, your choice. :-)

Both born on December 23rd.

While Garvey was hitless against Carlton, his teammates scored 4 runs against the lefty Hall of Famer. Don Sutton struggled a bit early, but found his groove in the middle innings.

1975 Houston Oilers at Cleveland Browns

The Oilers beat the Browns 17-3. Not a particularly interesting game, but here are few highlights (or lowlights):

* Oilers placekicker Kevin Butler missed 3 FGs.

* Greg Pruitt had just 19 yards on 18 carries and lost 2 fumbles.

* Dan Pastorini threw 3 more INTs. I think that's 11 in 4 games!

* The Oilers scored their first TD on a fumble recovery following a 25 yard completion by the Browns.

* Reggie Rucker had 9 receptions for the Browns but for only 62 yards.

Box score

Oilers are now 2-2 in the replay. In real life they were 3-1 to this point. Next up - the Redskins at home.

1921 Indians @ 1921 Yankees

I played this game with Sherco using the Polo Grounds Stadium chart that someone was nice enough to email.

In the first inning Babe Ruth hit a 2 run blast that was - well, Ruthian. It would have been a homer in any stadium.

In the 7th inning the Indians finally got to Waite Hoyt. Elmer Smith tripled on a ball hit deep to right center that would have been a homer in pretty much any other park. Joe Sewell followed with a fly ball that became a home run thanks to the short right field dimensions of the Polo Grounds. The Indians added a couple more in the inning to take a 4-2 lead that would be the final score.

Birthday Replay - Fergie Jenkins

1971 Cubs (Fergie Jenkins) vs 1971 Astros (Don Wilson)

Baseball can be a funny game. Fergie Jenkins shut down the Astros for 6 innings allowing just one base runner. Then in the seventh the Astros collected 4 straight hits to take a 2-0 lead. After leading off the inning with a double, Joe Morgan scored on Jimmy Wynn's single. Doug Rader's single brought Wynn home with the second run.

Although Don Wilson was pitching well, the Cubs certainly had their chances against him. They would finally break through with a solo homer by Jim Hickman in the 8th, but that would be all the scoring.

I guess Boston must have had a bad trip to NYC because they arrived in a bad mood and kept taking a bunch of penalties. They had 24 PiM to New York's 2. That disparity led to two power play goals and a whopping 51-12 advantage in shots on goal. Boston goalie Ed Johnston played well considering the barrage he had to face from the Rangers.

1975 Houston Oilers vs Bengals

The Oilers lose again as Pastorini throws 4 interceptions. UGH! Oilers are now 1-2.

Box score.

1975 Oilers versus Chargers

The Chargers owned the second half and win 34-24.

How did this happen? First off, the Oilers had 4 turnovers to the Chargers 2. But it was even worse than the margin suggests because the Oilers turnovers were deadly. In the first half Pastorini threw an interception at his own 16 that was returned to the Oilers 1 yard line. In the second half he threw an INT at his own 12. Finally, when the Oilers were trailing 31-24 late in the game, Kenny Burrough fumbled away the Oilers last chance to tie the game by putting the ball on the ground at the Oilers' 32. That's a total of 17 points on three Oilers turnovers and the Chargers don't have to go more 15 yards on any of the drives.

Still, the Chargers did have a couple of nice drives thanks to some crazy dice rolls. When the Oilers won the LOS battle, and that was most of the time, the Chargers rolled just the right numbers to make the play work. And when the Oilers lost the LOS, the difference was critical. It was frustrating, but I guess that's how it goes sometimes.

1962-63 Mini-Replay Game 10

Montreal at Chicago

The visiting Habs started quickly with two goals in the first. Then Mr. Kenny Wharram went to work in the second delighting the home crowd with a hat trick. The Hawks added another goal by Reg Fleming and in the course of one period they go from losing by two goals to winning by two. Montreal struck back with a goal in late in the third to make it a 4-3 game. They had some good opportunities to tie the game thanks to some bad penalties by Chicago, but they just could not get that game tying goal despite out shooting Chicago 12-6 in the final period. Chicago is now 3-1-0 while Montreal remains winless at 0-4-0.

1962-63 Mini-Replay Game 9

Chicago at Montreal

Chicago shocked the Habs fans with three first period goals. Two of the goals came on power plays. The Canadiens finally gave the home crowd something to cheer about late in the opening when Geoffrion found the back of the net.

The Canadiens continued to work their way back into the game with two more goals in the second period and we are all tied up at the second intermission.

I'm not sure what got into the Canadiens at intermission, but they came out in the third and started taking a bunch of penalties. Kenny Wharram made them pay for it with a power play goal at 15:31. That would be the decisive goal.

The Habs really shot themselves in the foot with the penalties. Ironically I am using a slightly modified penalty system that should help Montreal, but it did not in the game.

1975 Houston Oilers at New England Patriots

Game 1 at New England

Ok, just played my first game of DICE Football, and wouldn't you know it, the game goes into overtime.

The Oilers had some opportunities to win it in regulation, but they blew it. In the first half Dan Pastorini threw a costly pass that was intercepted at the Patriot 7 yard line. Skip Butler missed a 37 yard FG in the fourth quarter, but did find the uprights late in the quarter to tie the game.

The Patriots won the coin toss for overtime, but did nothing with the ball and had to punt from their own 19. The Oilers took possession with great field position at their own 49.  On 3rd and 4, Pastorini hit Burrough for a 32 yard gain down to the Patriot 17. The Oiler's worked the ball down to the 10 before sending out Butler to try an end the game. Butler's kick went through the uprights and the Oilers win 26-23!

This game featured 42 incompletions and 7 FGs.

Since it's usually a pain for me to try and format it here, I'll have posted the box score at Google docs.

1962-63 Mini-Replay Game 7

Detroit at Toronto

Toronto thrilled the home crowd with a couple of first period goals before Detroit got back in the game with a Gordie Howe power play goal in the second.  Toronto took over in the third thanks to a series of Detroit penalties. Dave Keon iced the game with a power play goal that gave Toronto a 4-1 lead and took the steam out of the visitors. Eddie Shack added the insult to the injury to make it a 5-1 final.

While Toronto was the class of the NHL in this season, it's still amazing how the Red Wings have had one period in each of their first three games where they just implode.

Finally, in a previous summary I had noted that Toronto's Carl Brewer was lost for the rest of the replay. Well, he made a miraculous recovery. Actually I realized later that I had misapplied the super simple injury rule, so he's healthy.

1962-63 Mini-Replay Game 6

The second game of the NY-Detroit series was eerily reminiscent of the first for the Red Wings as they had another disastrous second period. Detroit started well enough taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a Val Fonteyne goal, but the Rangers owned the second period. The shots were about even, but the Rangers found the net 3 times to take a 3-1 lead. Fonteyne added another third goal in the third, but the Red Wings could get no closer. Rangers win this one 4-2 and take both games of the series.

1980 - Dodgers at Astros

Don Sutton was brilliant in this game scattering 8 hits and walking none en route to a 4-1 complete game win. The Dodgers pounded out 17 hits off of 4 different Astros pitchers.

1962-63 Mini-Replay Game 5

After intercepting an errant Detroit pass, Andy Hebenton zipped down the ice on the breakaway and smashed a slapshot that flew past a helpless Terry Sawchuck. Detroit actually outplayed New York in the first period outshooting them 13-8, but none went past Gump Worsley (what a great name).

While the first period was frustrating for Detroit, the second was a complete catastrophe. Not only did they give up 3 more goals, but they lost their 1st line center Parker McDonald for the rest of the game and for their next game as well.

It did not get any better for the Wings in the third as the Rangers dominated them for a 16-5 shots advantage. A great performance by the Rangers and a thoroughly forgettable one by the Red Wings.

1962-63 NHL Project with Dice Hockey?

Ok, I'm thinking I may use Dice Hockey to set-up a 10 game mini-season. The top two finishers will then play in a best of seven series.
