1935 Top Mound Showdown - Bridges vs Harder

Tommy Bridges (Tigers. 10-64) vs Mel Harder (Indians 10-66)

1935 Tigers  000 002 022 1 -  7  13  0
1935 Indians 310 010 001 0 -  6  12  0

W - Chief Hogsett     L  - Oral Hildebrand
SV - Eldon Auker

Home Runs - Cochrane (Tigers), Hal Trosky (Indians)

Bit of a strange game because despite the offense, most of the hits seem to come off the pitcher cards.

The Tribe scored early and often against Bridges sending him to the showers after just five innings. Trailing 5-0, it looked bleak for the Tigers, but they chipped away and by the ninth inning they were trailing by just one. Mickey Cochrane's two run homer gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead. The Indians tied it up in the bottom of the ninth when Hal Trosky doubled home Earl Averill.

So, onto extra innings. Hank Greenberg led off with a single. Reliever Oral Hildebrand retired Goose Goslin and Billy Rogell before Gee Walker tripled home Greenberg.

Milt Galazter drew a walk in the bottom of the ninth off Eldon Auker, but was stranded at first. Chief Hogsett blew the save but picked up the win.

1935 Top Mound Showdown - Root vs Dean

Charlie Root (Cubs, 10-65) vs Dizzy Dean (Cardinals 10-65)

1935 Cubs       101 120 001  -  6  9  0
1935 Cardinals  000 001 400  -  5  8  3

W - Fabian Kowalik    L - Jesse Haines

While he hardly had his "A" game, Dizzy Dean was victimized by poor defense as three of his five  runs allowed were unearned.

Root dominated the Gas House Gang until he imploded in the seventh. Jack Rathcock's two out, base clearing double tied the game at 5-5.

Gabby Hartnett 's ninth inning double off Jesse Haines gave the Cubs a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth Frankie Frisch singled with two out, but was gunned down trying steal second.

Rathcock had 4 RBI for the Cards.

1956 Yankees  000 302 000 -  5  3  1
1956 Indians  000 100 100 -  2  7  0

W - Ford      L - Lemon

Home Runs - Bill Skowron 2 (Yankees)

Bob Skowron was a one man wrecking crew taking Lemon deep twice for the only hits Lemon allowed. Unfortunately for the Indians, Lemon was a bit wild and allowed three walks in front of the two blasts which plated all five Yankee runs.
Ford scattered 7 hits in getting the complete game win.

1911 New Yorkk    200 040 00-   6  12  0

While both pitchers struggled in this one, Leifeld's defense really let him down, especially in the fifth when two errors opened the floodgates and allowed the Giants to score four unearned runs.

1911 A's      000 000 030  3  7  2
1911 Red Sox  012 100 00-  4  8  1

The Red Sox scored the first four runs of the game against Plank and the World Champs from Philly. Nunamaker's single scored Clyde Engle to give the Sox a 1-0 lead in the second.

Two errors by A's shortstop Jack Barry allowed the Sox to extend the lead with a couple of unearned runs in the fourth.

Joe Wood's homer - yep Joe Wood - gave the Sox a 4-0 lead in the fourth.

The A's finally made it interesting in the top of the eighth. An error by Engle set the stage for three unearned runs off Wood. Ed Karger relieved Wood in the ninth to get the save.

Yankees  020 000 001 - 3  7  0

Red Sox  001 000 000 - 1  7  1

Lou Gehrig led off the second with a single and then scored on Tony Lazzeri's triple. Art Jorgens' single plated Lazzeri to give the Yanks a 2-0 lead.

Mel Almada cut the lead in half in when he scored on a Bing Miller single in the third.

The Yankees added another run in the top of the ninth when Myril Hoag raced home on a wild pitch.

Ruffing retired the last 13 hitters he faced en route to the 3-1 win. Grove pitched pretty well against the Bombers, but it just wasn't enough.

1956 Top Mound Showdown - Conley vs Newcombe

Braves (Gene Conley 10-62)   at   Dodgers (Don Newcombe 10-62)

Conley found himself in trouble from the start of this one giving up two runs in the first and three in the third. He was yanked in the fourth inning after giving up his sixth run of the game. Meanwhile, Newcombe allowed only three baserunners in the first six innings. He struggled a bit in the seventh and eighth, so he was relieved by Clem Labine in the ninth.

Jack Dittmar took Labine deep for his second home run of the game and brought the Braves to within two runs of the Dodgers, but they would get no closer.

Gil Hodges had 5 RBI for the Dodgers. Dittmar had 4 RBI for the Braves.

Pittsburgh's George Gibson scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third on a single by Bobby Byrne.

Fred Snodgrass led off the top of the fourth with a triple and then scored on Red Murray's grooubd out.

That was all the scoring until the 10th. Chief Wilson doubled off of reliever Doc Crandall. Crandall retired George Gibson on a grounder to short. Newt Hunter, pinch hitting for Steele, delivered a two out single to bring home Gibson with the winning run.

Both pitchers were very effective despite racking few strikeouts.

Horst-Rüdiger Schlöske   FRG  45.05
Markku Kukkoaho          FIN  45.20
Karl Honz                FRG  46.19

This was a very fast race. Matthews' real life time was 44.66, but here the top four finishers all bettered that.

Matthews' time of 43.89 was just a hair behind the Olympic and World Record of 43.86 set by Lee Evans at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

Before the race I rolled to see if John Smith would finish and what his rating would be. Here were the possibilities: 1-4 he does not finish, 5 he finishes using his original C rating, 6 he finishes using a B rating. He rolled a 6 - the best possible outcome for him. Unfortunately, he got off to a slow start from which he could not recover.

Home Runs:

  Cleveland -  Bob Feller

Score was cruising along until he got hurt in the bottom of the fourth. He should be good to go for his next start, but the Indians definitely missed him in this game.

After the Indians took a 2-1 lead on a rare Bob Feller home run, the normally reliable relief pitching of Ray Narleski and Don Mossi went AWOL and the Orioles broke the game wide open in the eighth. To add injury to the insult, Bobby Avila will miss 18 games with an injury.

Through 26 innings pitched, Score has an ERA of 2.05 with a batting average against of .159! His K/9IP is 7.2 while his BB/9IP is 3.8.

Herb Score replay bonus game 1

The previous Score start was part of a Sunday doubleheader. I decided to go ahead and play the second game as well. Bob Lemon pitched for the Indians while Bob Miller started for the Tigers.

Home Runs:

The Indians just never could get any clutch hits in this game leaving 13 men on base! Meanwhile, Detroit took Lemon deep a couple of times, and that's all she wrote. Indians are now 3-1 in the replay.

Herb was really on his game today pitching a shutout until the tired a bit in he ninth. Al Rosen's three run homer in the first gave him all the run support he would need.

Mathewson gets the complete game allowing just 5 hits in the first 7 innings.Beals Becker had a double and a triple while driving in two runs.

1935 All-Star Game

The game was played in Cleveland, so the AL was the home team. Bill Walker started for the NL and Lefty Gomez for the AL. Here's how it went.

Joe Vosmik led off the bottom of the first with a walk and scored on a Jimmie Foxx sac fly. AL leads 1-0.

Jimmie Wilson tripled off Lefty Grove in the top of the fifth and then scored on Pepper Martin's single to tie the game 1-1.

The Nationals took the lead in the eighth on a strange sequence. Arky Vaughan walked and then went to third after singles by Mel Ott and Ducky Medwick. With the bases loaded and Mel Harder on the mound for the AL, Harder inexplicably balks to score Vaughan! NL leads 2-1.

Buddy Myer led off the eighth with a walk and then scored when Earl Averill drew a bases loaded walk against Dizzy Dean. Game tied 2-2.

In the bottom of the tenth Ben Chapman doubles off Paul Derringer. That brings pitcher Tommy Bridges to the plate. I tried to play everybody, so I have no pinch-hitter for Bridges. But Bridges is not a terrible hitter for a pitcher - he hit .239. You can see where this is going, no? Sure enough, Bridges doubles to score Chapman with the winning run. Bridges gets the walk off double and the Win too.

Cleveland (Herb Score) at Chicago White Sox (Jack Harshman)

In the first few innings both pitchers struggled a bit with a lot of dice rolls being out of their control ranges. They still managed to get key strikeouts or double plays to keep the game low scoring.

The Indians scored two runs in the top of the first on a Jim Busby single that scored Al Smith and Al Rosen. The Sox cut the lead in half on Luis Aparicio's second inning double that scored Larry Doby. Walt Dropo raced home on the same play, but was nailed at the plate by Gene Woodling's accurate throw. The Sox tied in the game in the fifth when Minnie Minoso singled home Jack Harshman.

That was all the scoring until the top of the fourteenth. Gene Woodling led off with a walk and went to second on Bobby Avila's sac bunt. Al Rosen's two out single brought him home to give the Indians a 3-2 lead. Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning to seal the win.

The White Sox used 7 pitchers while the Indians used 5. There were 35 players who got into this game. It was almost like one of those youth baseball games where everyone has to play!
