While he hardly had his "A" game, Dizzy Dean was victimized by poor defense as three of his five runs allowed were unearned.
Root dominated the Gas House Gang until he imploded in the seventh. Jack Rathcock's two out, base clearing double tied the game at 5-5.
Gabby Hartnett 's ninth inning double off Jesse Haines gave the Cubs a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth Frankie Frisch singled with two out, but was gunned down trying steal second.
Rathcock had 4 RBI for the Cards.
