Random Extra Innings games # 3

1932 Yankees (Lefty Gomez) vs 1933 Senators (Alvin Chief Crowder)
The Yankees broke a 1-1 tie with a 4 run fourth inning that was punctuated by Tony Lazzeri's 3 run homer. The Senators knocked Lopez out of the game with a 5 run outburst in the bottom of the fourth. The Yankees were trailing 6-5 in the top of the ninth when they... went down in order as Bobby Burke retired Hall of Famers Ruth, Gehrig, and Dickey. So, it's a 6-5 victory for the Senators.

Ruth and Gehrig were a combined 1 for 10 while Heine Manush went 4 for 5 for Washington.

1940 Reds (Bucky Walters) vs 1941 Dodgers (Whit Wyatt)
It didn't take long for the fireworks to start in this game as Mark McCormick reached on a Ducky Medwick error and then scored on Ival Goodman's single to give the Reds a 1-0 lead. The Dodgers bounced back with 3 in the bottom of first. Pete Reiser scored scored on Ival Goodman's two out error. Dolph Camilli scored on Billy Herman's single. Herman then scored on pitcher Bucky Walters' error. So, it was 3-1 after one, and I thought I had another high-scoring game on my hands.

But both pitchers were brilliant after the 1st. Wyatt allowed just 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 3. Walters allowed 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5. The Dodgers win 3-1 in a game that was marked by great pitching and lousy defense (4 errors were committed in the game.)

1928 Cardinals (Grover Cleveland Alexander) vs 1929 Cubs (Charlie Root)
The Cards were one out away from a 4-3 victory before Riggs Stephenson's two run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the Cubs a 5-4 win.

1955 Dodgers (Carl Erskine) vs. 1957 Braves (Bob Buhl)

This was good old country hard ball pitchers duel. Red Schoendienst doubled homed Andy Pafko in the bottom of the eighth to break a 1-1 tie and give the Braves a 2-1 win.

1969 Mets (Tom Seaver) vs. 1975 Reds (Don Gullett)
Gullet was just two outs away from a complete game win when all "h - e - double toothpicks" broke out. After the dust cleared, the Mets had put up 8 runs in the inning for a 9-3 win. This was one of the craziest games I have ever played

1969 Orioles (Jim Palmer) vs 1971 A's (Catfish Hunter)
Jim Palmer dominates the A's for 3-0 complete game shutout. Paul Blair drove in 2 runs with a solo homer and a double.

1939 Yankees (Lefty Gomez) vs. 1946 Red Sox (Tex Hughson)

1939 Yankees (Lefty Gomez) vs. 1946 Red Sox (Tex Hughson)

Bill Dickey's 3 run homer in the top of the first gave the Yanks a 3-0 lead. Bobby Doerr came to bat with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 3rd and promptly cleared the bases with a 3 run double to tie the game at 3-3. Each team added a run in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. Neither team can score during regulation, so it's off extra innings.

Charlie Keller scored on Bill Dickey's's two out single to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead. The bottom of the ninth was crazy. Catfish Metkovich led off with a double and advanced to third on Rip Russell's single. Marius Russo uncorked a wild pitch that brought Metkovich home with the tying and advanced Russell to third. Russell then scored the winning run on Johnny Pesky's two out single. Red Sox win 6-5.

Here's a curiosity - both Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio were 0-5.

Some Random Extra Inning games

Urban Shocker out-pitches Walter Johnson as the Browns win 3-1.

1911 A's (Eddie Plank) vs 1920 White Sox (Lefty Williams)
The Sox jumped all over Plank scoring 5 runs in the first 3 innings en route to a 6-4 win.

1906 Cubs (Ed Reulbach) vs. 1912 Giants (Jeff Tesreau)
Reulbach gives up just one run on the mound and scores the winning run in a 2-1 Cubs victory.

1920 Indians (Stan Covaleski) vs. 1921 Yankees (Bob Shawkey)
After the Indians took a 7-6 lead with two runs in the top of the ninth, the Yankees win 8-7 on a two run homer by Frank "Home Run" Baker in the bottom of the ninth.

1929 A's (Lefty Grove) vs. 1927 Yankees (Waite Hoyt)
The pitchers dominated early, but the hitters started going crazy in the fifth inning. The A's took a 6-5 lead into the ninth and added two more in the frame. Tony Lazzeri's two run single scored Joe Dugan and Ben Paschal to make it an 8-7 A's lead. Earle Combs' two run double scored Lazzeri and Ruth to give the Bronx Bombers a 9-8 win.
