1974-75 Rockets game 2

Posted out of order, but...

Rockets   119
Bullets   131

You don't usually see a team shoot 54.5% and lose, but the Bullets shot
an even better 58.6% and had 10 more free throw attempts. Rudy Tomjanovich
had another brilliant game hitting 19 of 24 shots for a game high 38 points.
Ed Ratleff hit 7 of 8h shots to chip in 18 points. The Bullets had four starters
score at least 20 points. Mike Riordan and Kevin Porter led the hometown team
with 25 a piece. Calvin Murphy had
another rough game hitting just 6 of 22 shots.

1974-75 Rockets game 3

Houston           103
Kansas City-Omaha 123

OUCH! Another game where the Rockets shoot well (52.7%) but their opponents shoot even better (60%). Actually, it was even worse than that because the KCO starters sat the entire fourth quarter after building up a 33 point lead on the strength of a sizzling 69% shooting performance through the first three quarters. Tiny Archibald led the way for the Kings with 28 points on 13 of 19 shooting. Sam Lacey (10-11 fgs) and Nate Williams (11-15 fgs) each added 24 points.

Rudy Tomjanovich was awesome again for the Rockets with a game high 29 points (13 of 19 shooting). 6 assists, and 5 rebounds. Calvin Murphy finally had a good game with 18 points (8-15) and 6 assists.

1974-75 Rockets

Rockets 109
Jazz     89

After a sluggish start, the Rockets found their range and out-shot the Jazz 50% to 39.6%.
Add a 62 to 41 rebounding advantage, and this one turned into a rout. Rudy Tomjanovich
was especially deadly hitting 11 of his 13 shots en route to a game high 27 points.
Meanwhile Pete Maravich only had two points at half-time and finished with an
underwhelming 15 points to lead the Jazz. The Rockets had six players score in double
figures and Calvin Murphy was not one of those players.

1975 ABA playoffs - Spirits at Nets (game 2)

Spirits 131
Nets    112

The Nets cut the lead to six at one point in the fourth quarter, but the Spirits answered every run and controlled the last half of the fourth.

* Billy "The Whopper" Paultz had a terrible game hitting just 4 of 16 shots.

* Marvin Barnes had a monster game for the Spirits.

* Maurice Lucas had an all around excellent game.

* Dr. J started slowly, but finished with another really strong game.

* Larry Kenon and Dr. J combined for almost half of the Nets points and more than half of their rebounds.

I don't know how the Spirits lost 52 games. Apparently their defense was lousy, but boy can they rebound. They out-rebounded the Nets 62-47 in this game.

1975 ABA Playoffs - Spirits at Nets (game 1)

Spirits of St. Louis   136
New Jersey Nets        124 OT

The end of regulation was pretty interesting. The Spirits controlled the second half, but the Nets started whittling away at the lead. They hit 3 of 4 three pointers down the stretch. Finally, with just three "shots" left and the Nets trailing 117-120, Julius Erving made a shot and was fouled. He hit the foul shot to tie the game. The Spirits failed to score on their final regulation possession as did the Nets.

It was all St. Louis in the overtime as they pull away from the Nets.

November 16, 1974 - Pacers at Spurs

November 16, 1974
Pacers at Spurs

The Spurs trailed by as many as 15 in the third quarter and found themselves down 96-85 at the end of the quarter.  The Pacers would go cold in the fourth and, when they were not missing shots, they were putting the Spurs on the free throw line. Eventually the Spurs took the lead only to give it back as we near crunch time.  The Spurs went on a bit of a run and this game looked like it might go down to the wire.

Bob Netolicky's jumper with just two timing units gave the Pacers a 122-121 lead. So, we are down to one shot. George Gervin, like Pacers star George  McGinnis, had fouled out, so the Spurs would have to get the big shot from someone else. James Silas received the inbound pass and he found Swen Nater for the open look. Nater shoots, and he nails it! Last shot of the game and the Spurs win 123-122!

The Spurs won this game at the free throw line making 27 of 32 free throws while the Pacers only took 16 (making 15).

Nov. 9, 1974 ABA - Pacers at Spurs

November 9, 1974
Pacers at Spurs

Collis Temple's late 4th quarter shot brought the Spurs to within a point of the Pacers with just one shot left. The Spurs intentionally fouled Darrell Hillman who hit both his free throws to make it a 131-128 game. The Spurs missed the potential game tying three pointer on the last shot of the game.

The Pacers had a big advantage at the free throw line shooting 41 free throws to the Spurs 27. In fact, Swen Nater, Rich Jones, and Coby Dietrick fouled out of the game while George Gervin and George Karl had five fouls each.

The free throw disparity and some poor shooting by the spurs helped the
pacers to open up a 16 point lead in the second half. The Spurs slowly chipped away in the fourth quarter before coming up just short. Next week - a rematch of these two teams.

1974-75 ABA - Spurs at Squires

San Antonio at Virginia
November 2, 1974

While the Squires proved a pesky bunch, they just didn't have enough to keep up with the Spurs as San Antonio wins 106-96. Although George Gervin dominated the first half, teammate Rich Jones stole the spotlight from "The Iceman" in the second half and posted a game high 32 points. Gervin finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Swen Nater snagged a game high 16 rebounds.

The Squires attack could only be described as balanced. Dave Tzardzik and Willie Wise each scored 14, while Gorge Irvine scored 13 and two other players scored an even dozen. But you're not going to beat the Spurs shooting just 41%.

1974-75 ABA - Colonels at Pacers

Replay of a October 26, 1974 game.

The visiting Colonels led 63-62 at the half, but couldn't find the basket at all in the third quarter shooting just 26% from the field. While the Colonels were laying bricks in the third, the Pacers found nothing but net hitting 71% of their shots in the quarter.

George McGinnis led all scorers with 30 and also snagged 9 rebounds.  Artis Gilmore led the Colonels with 17, but he got into foul trouble in the third quarter and fouled out early in the fourth.

1974-75 ABA - Nets at Nuggets

Replay of a game played 10-19-1974

This was a very close and exciting game as neither team ever had a lead of more than seven and there were dozens of lead changes and ties.

Down by two points with just two shots left in regulation, New York's. Brian Taylor launched a jumper that clanged off the rim, but Larry Kenon grabbed the rebound and hit the game tying shot as time expired.

The Nuggets out-shoot the Nets in the extra period enabling them to send their fans home happy with a 141-138 win.

Young Mr. Malone

I'm not sure how many games I'll end up playing, but I intend to occasionally work in a game or two from the 1974-75 ABA set by featuring a 19 year old Moses Malone. He played for the fairly mediocre Utah Stars. Since I grew up a Rockets fan and Mo was one of my favorite players, I thought it would be fun to play a few games from his rookie season. First up, the San Antonio Spurs with George Gervin.

What a crazy game! I keep saying that, but check it out.

Stars   36   38   27   35  -  136
Spurs   36   34   24   26  -  120

Highlights -

* Both teams shot like crazy in the first half. Utah was 31 of 44 (70%) while San Antonio was 28 of 49 (57%). The half time score was 74-70.

* Utah's dynamic duo of Malone and Ron Boone were a combined 30 of 40 from the floor!

* Malone led all scores with 34 points and also grabbed a game high 12 rebounds.

* Boone scores 31 for the Stars.

* While George "The Iceman" Gervin scored 26 for the Spurs, Rich Jones led the team with 29.

* Swen Nater led San Antonio with 11 rebounds.

* Final shooting percentages - Utah              67% (56/84)
                                              San Antonio   52% (49/95)

1993-94 Rockets - Game 4

November 13, 1993
Rockets vs Suns

Rockets lose 113-97.

Olajuwon scored 23 on 11 of 17 shooting. Otis Thorpe chipped in 15 and Robert Horry scored 14.

The main problem for the Rockets was that Phoenix just shot lights out - especially AC Green. Green led Phoenix with 20 points on 8 of 10 shooting!

The Phoenix attack featured great balance. In addition to Green's 20, Dan Majerle scored 19 and Kevin Johnson added 18 while Charles Barkley and Cedric Ceballos scored 16 each. Sir Charles also grabbed 18 rebounds.

Suns    22 30 28 33 - 113
Rockets 23 24 22 28 -  97

The Rockets are now 2-3. Surely it will get better. Can't get much worse.

1993-94 Rockets - Game 5

November 15, 1993
Rockets at Philadelphia

            1 2 3 4 F
Rockets 29 21 15 22 - 87
76ers 19 20 23 31 - 93

This was a crazy game. Just 18 timing units into the game (about 4 minutes of actual time), a bench fight erupted that resulted in the Rockets losing Hakeem Olajuwon, Otis Thorpe, and Scotty Brooks to ejection. The 76ers lost Shawn Bradley, Tim Perry, and Greg Graham.

The Rockets weathered the loss initially and took a 50-39 lead into the half. But when the game resumed they could not find the bucket to save their lives and lose 93-87. Vernon "Mad Max" Maxwell lived up to his name and lead the Rockets with 29 points, but it came on 8 of 24 shooting. Mario Elie added 19, but Kenny Smith (9) and Robert Horry (8) failed to crack double digits on a night when the Rockets needed every player to step up their game.

The 76ers were led by Dana Barros with 20 and Clarence Weatherspoon with 19.

Rockets are now 2-2 pending my completion of the Phoenix game.

1993-94 Rockets replay - game 3

Rockets  114
Warriors 106(OT)

The Rockets trailed by 18 points in the third, but come back to win 114-106 in overtime at Golden State. Latrell Sprewell led all scorers with 27, but hit only 12 of his 27 shots. The Rockets were led by Olajuwon as usual with 26.

Trailing 100-98 with just one shot left in regulation, the Rockets worked the ball inside to Olajuwon who hit the game tying shot.

This game had some brutal shooting and tons of turnovers, but an ugly win is still a win. Rockets are now 2-1.

1993-94 Rockets replay - game 2

The Rockets got off to a terrible start shooting in this game and never recovered as they lose 101-88 at Portland. They finish the game shooting just 40% from the field. Olajuwon led the way with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Clyde Drexler and Rod Strickland each scored 24 for the Blazers while Clifford Robinson added 20.

Rockets are now 1-1.

1993-94 Rockets replay - game 1

Ok, I finished my first DICE Basketball game - and it was a doozy. The Rockets led 19-10 after the the first quarter and maintained the lead going into the 4th quarter.

But the Nets were able to keep it close and the 4th quarter was crazy. First, Mario Elie and Kevin Edwards are ejected for fighting. A little later, Vernon Maxwell and Rumeal Robinson trade punches and also get tossed. As if that weren't enough of the fisticuffs, a bench clearing brawl led to the ejections of Hakeem Olajuwon, Otis Thorpe, and Sam Cassell for the Rockets while the Nets lost Derrick Coleman, Armen Gilliam, and Chris Morris. So, that's 10 players ejected from the game!

With just 4 shots just in the game, Kenny Anderson hit a 3 pointer to make it a 114-112 game. After forcing a Rockets turnover on the inbounds pass, the Nets get the ball back to Anderson who ties the game at 114. With just two shots left, Scotty Brooks hits his only shot of the game to give the Rockets a 116-114 lead. The Nets, having the last shot of the game, were hoping to get the ball into Kenny Anderson's hands, but they had to settle for a shot by Dwayne Schintzius that missed badly. Rockets win 116-114. Whew!

* Hakeem had 20 points and 19 rebounds for the Rockets.

* Kenny Smith and Vernon Maxwell led the Rockets with 22 points each.

* Derrick Coleman led all scorers with 29 points and led the Nets with 11 rebounds.
