Here's a game in honor of the late Phil Cavarretta.
1945 Dodgers (Vic Lombardi) vs 1945 Cubs (Hank Wyse)
The Dodgers scrored first in the top of the second on a Eddie Basinski sac fly that brought home Dixie Walker. The Cubs answered in the bottom of the inning on a Dewey Williams double that plated Andy Pafko. Andy Pafko's fourth inning grounder to first scored Bill Nicholson to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead. Peanuts Lowery followed with a single scoring Phil Cavarretta with the Cubs second run of the inning.
The Cubs extended the lead to 4-1 when Pafko raced home on a Lowery triple.
Augie Galan led off the ninth with a solo homer to make it a two run game. Dixie Walker followed with a walk, and suddenly the game got a little tense for Cubs starter Wyse. But Wyse retired Walker on a fielder's choice grounder and then retired Frenchy Borgdaray on a grounder to first before finishing the game with a strikeout of pinch hitter Ed Stevens.
Cavarretta went 1 for 4 with a run scored.
